At 4 Seasons 4 U, our handcrafted steel products are made to be enjoyed outdoors for many years. Because steel is exposed to rain, moisture, changing temperatures and, in some areas, coastal conditions, choosing the right protective finish is an important part of the manufacturing process.
Two options commonly considered are Hot-Dip Galvanising and a Cold-Applied Zinc Protective Coating. Both provide additional protection to steel, but they differ in how they are applied and in the type of surface finish they produce.
Understanding this difference helps you choose the option that best suits your environment, your product and your expectations for the final appearance.
Hot-dip galvanising is primarily selected for corrosion protection. Because the steel is immersed in molten zinc, the finished zinc layer may show natural variations in texture and appearance.
Cold-applied zinc protection is applied differently and generally allows greater control over the smoothness of the steel surface before the final paint system is applied.
For this reason, the most suitable option may depend on whether maximum corrosion protection or a more refined decorative finish is your main priority.
Hot-dip galvanising involves immersing the fabricated steel item into molten zinc. The zinc reacts with the steel and forms a protective coating that helps protect the underlying steel against corrosion.
This makes hot-dip galvanising particularly useful for products that will remain outdoors or be exposed to demanding environmental conditions.
Hot-dip galvanising does not produce a perfectly smooth surface. Depending on the steel, fabrication and galvanising process, the zinc surface will show natural texture, mottling, raised areas or visible zinc patterns.
Best suited when: corrosion protection is the main priority and some natural variation in the surface is acceptable.
A cold-applied zinc protective coating is applied to properly prepared steel rather than immersing the completed item into molten zinc.
Because the coating is applied differently, it generally allows greater control over the final surface preparation before primer and paint are applied.
This option is often better suited to decorative steel products where a smoother and more refined painted appearance is especially important.
Best suited when: a smooth decorative painted finish is a major consideration.
Hot-dip galvanising is primarily a corrosion-protection process rather than a cosmetic finishing process. The photographs below show actual 4 Seasons 4 U products immediately after hot-dip galvanising and before our final paint system was applied. They demonstrate the natural variation that can occur in the zinc surface.
Hot-dip galvanising can create different textures around welds, joins and adjoining steel sections. These variations may remain visible beneath the final painted finish.
This example shows the textured zinc surface directly after hot-dip galvanising and before painting. The finish can be visibly uneven rather than perfectly smooth.
Even on the same handcrafted product, individual steel sections may develop slightly different surface characteristics during the galvanising process.
Some surface preparation and dressing can be carried out before painting. However, aggressive grinding or polishing can remove part of the protective zinc coating and expose the underlying steel.
For this reason, surface preparation must balance the desired appearance with preserving the corrosion protection provided by the zinc layer.
The aim is not simply to make the surface as smooth as possible, but to preserve both appearance and protection.
There is no single finish that is automatically the best choice for every application. The right option depends on the product, its location, environmental exposure and the appearance you would like to achieve.
Consider this option when:
- strong corrosion protection is the main priority
- the item will remain permanently outdoors
- environmental exposure is demanding
- natural surface texture beneath the paint is acceptable
Appearance:
Natural zinc texture and irregularities may remain visible beneath the final painted finish.
Protection:
Strong zinc-based corrosion protection.
Consider this option when:
- the product is highly decorative
- a smoother painted appearance is especially important
- the piece will be viewed closely
- an additional zinc-based protective layer is desired beneath the paint.
Appearance:
Generally smoother and more refined.
Protection:
Additional zinc-based protection, depending on the coating system used.
Coastal environments can expose outdoor steel to higher levels of moisture and airborne salt, increasing the risk of corrosion.
For products installed close to the coast, additional corrosion protection is strongly recommended. The most suitable system will depend on the product, the exact location, level of exposure and the desired appearance.

Every 4 Seasons 4 U product is individually fabricated by hand. Our steelwork is cut, bent, welded, shaped, prepared and finished by people rather than produced as a mass-manufactured moulded item.
Small variations are therefore part of the character of handcrafted steelwork.
However, sharp edges, unsafe finishing or workmanship that does not meet our standards are not considered normal handcrafted variation and should always be brought to our attention.
No protective finish should be considered completely maintenance-free. Outdoor steel products should be inspected from time to time, particularly after transport, installation or exposure to harsh conditions.
Chips, scratches or damaged paint should be repaired promptly to help maintain the protection beneath the finish.
If you require touch-up paint or advice on maintaining your 4 Seasons 4 U product, please contact us.
Regular care helps protect both the appearance and lifespan of your handcrafted steel product.
Tell us which product you are interested in, where it will be installed and how exposed it will be to the weather. We will gladly help you choose the most suitable protective finish for your project.
